The City of Fort Pierce is sharing an important alert from the Fort Pierce Animal Adoption Center regarding a recent increase in Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) cases in the community. At this time, 11 confirmed cases have been identified.
Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus, especially for unvaccinated dogs and puppies. The virus spreads through contact with infected feces or contaminated surfaces, including grass, sidewalks, shoes, and hands.
How residents can help protect their pets:
- Ensure dogs are vaccinated. Puppies should begin their vaccine series early and complete all recommended boosters.
- Keep unvaccinated dogs and puppies at home. Avoid dog parks, boarding facilities, and other public areas until vaccinations are complete.
- Disinfect with bleach if a pet has been sick or there is concern about possible exposure.
- Watch for symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea (especially bloody), loss of appetite, weakness, and dehydration.
- Seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms appear—early treatment can save lives.
The City of Fort Pierce encourages all pet owners to remain vigilant and take preventive steps to help stop the spread of this virus. Please share this notice with other dog owners to help keep pets in the community safe.
