Chief of Police

Chief David Smith is a law enforcement veteran with more than 24 years of dedicated public service. He currently serves as Chief of Police for the Fort Pierce Police Department, bringing extensive operational and leadership experience to the role.

 

Chief Smith began his law enforcement career in 2001 with the Webster City Police Department in Iowa. In 2003, he joined the Prince William County Police Department in Virginia, where he served for over 23 years in a jurisdiction of approximately 497,000 residents in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. During his tenure, he rose through the ranks and held key leadership positions, including Commander of the Personnel Bureau and Division Commander for Eastern District Operations.

 

Throughout his career, Chief Smith has served in a wide range of assignments, including Operations East, Central, and West (across day, evening, and midnight shifts), Bike Team, Special Operations in the Crash Unit, the Criminal Justice Academy, Criminal Investigations Division–Youth Services, and the Personnel Bureau. He also served as a Civil Disturbance Unit squad leader, Incident Management Team training coordinator, and team commander, playing a significant role in officer development and training.

 

Before entering law enforcement, Chief Smith honorably served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division and later with the 194th Long Range Surveillance Detachment of the Iowa National Guard.

 

Chief Smith is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has completed advanced leadership training through the Professional Executive Leadership School, the Institute for Leadership in Changing Times, and the West Point Leadership Course. His career is distinguished by numerous letters of recognition and a strong commitment to professional excellence, leadership, and community service.
